Sciatica Treatments

Sciatica Pain

Dr. Dean Insana has a practice in Cherry Hill, NJ where he sees patients on a regular basis who have sciatica. Though it's not a disease in its own right, sciatica is a term that describes pain and other symptoms that affect the sciatic nerve. Fortunately, it's a treatable issue when you go to visit our chiropractor.

What's Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It runs from your lower back and down both legs. When the nerve is compressed or damaged, it causes symptoms, such as weakness, numbness, pain, tingling, and burning. It may vary in severity. In the more severe cases, it can cause excruciating pain.

Most of the time, sciatica only affects one side of your body.

Causes of Sciatica

A pinched nerve could result from a herniated disc. Another potential cause is a bone spur - an overgrowth of a bone - on the vertebrae could place pressure on a nerve. Diabetes may also damage your nerves.

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a condition that occurs when the spine narrows and places pressure on the nerves. Lumbar spinal stenosis specifically affects the lower portion of your back, where the sciatic nerves emerge.

Some pregnant women develop sciatica either during their first or last trimester.

Certain factors increase your risk of sciatica, such as the following:

  • Wearing high-heeled shoes
  • Sleeping on a mattress that's too firm or soft.
  • Age
  • Being overweight
  • Smoking

Our Cherry Hill, NJ Chiropractor, will ask you questions about your symptoms and when you experience them most often. Determining the cause of nerve compression will allow us to devise better treatments, of which you may need more than one.

Dr. Insana may recommend you undergo imaging so our practitioner can look at your bones and possible soft tissue.

The treatment could include a spinal alignment. Typically, we'll provide multiple alignments for you to see the fullest effect. It consists of our practitioner moving the vertebrae in the back to align with the rest of the spinal column, removing pressure from the surrounding tissues.

Other possible treatments include:

  • Exercise therapy
  • Cryotherapy
  • Inversion therapy
  • Lifestyle advice

Sciatica can affect your life and cause a variety of nerve-related symptoms. Fortunately, you don't have to suffer. Dr. Insana can help.
