TMJ

More than 10 million people in the United States suffer from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). TMJ is a painful condition that affects the area where the lower jaw connects to the sides of the skull, which impairs function and sensation in the face, and jaw, which may spread to the ears, neck, and shoulders. The majority of TMJ sufferers are women in their childbearing years.

Some of the symptoms are facial pain, jaw joint pain; popping, grating or clicking sounds with movement of the jaw joint; trouble swallowing; the jaw locking, either open or closed; pain in the joints of the face when opening or closing the mouth, yawning, or chewing; a bite that feels “off” or as if it is continually changing; deviation of the jaw to one side; limited opening or inability to open the mouth comfortably; swelling on the side of the face and/or mouth; ringing in the ears; ear pain; decreased hearing ability; dizziness; and visual upset.

Since every person reacts differently, different folks may have different symptoms but the ones listed above are the symptoms most popularly seen in my office.

Chiropractic takes a conservative approach in healing TMJ disorders by correcting and preventing alteration of nerve functions and interference to the transmission of mental impulses resulting in a lessening of the body’s innate ability to express its natural health potential.

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. Therefore, therapies are based on the fact that disease is often caused by interference with nerve function. And using spinal adjustment to bring nerves back "on line" means restoration of normal nerve function, in a natural, non-stress method, and without drugs.
